The area is renowned for its biodiversity. Its highland regions slope down into great plains which form part of the Serengeti Ecosystem. As well as massive herds of zebra and wildebeest that form part of the Great Migration, the area also houses rare and endangered species such as the black rhino.

Against the slopes of the crater and in its surrounds are a variety of exceptional stays – from classically styled manor houses to unique lodges on the crater rim. Each offers a selection of fantastic activities, from hiking to game drives, and so much more.

For those planning an extended journey, connecting from Ngorongoro to Serengeti is seamless, allowing for a deeper exploration of Tanzania’s iconic wildlife regions. Additionally, routes to Zanzibar are well-established, making it convenient to combine mountain treks or coastal retreats with your safari adventure.

The Dry Season

June to October
This is peak season with abundant wildlife, particularly visible along the barren plains. June to October sees less crowded game drives from June onwards, with peak season in July and August.

November to February
December to February is the calving season, attracting visitors after the November rains. January is ideal for wildebeest breeding as a part of the Great Migration, and February offers dry conditions for predator sightings.

The Green Season

March
March is optimal to avoid crowds, but do expect some showers.

April to May
During the April to May rainy season, the crater is lush and less crowded. However, access can be difficult, so check with us before you book.
