Laikipia, in northern Kenya, is a distinctive safari destination, exuding an aura of authenticity, exclusivity, and uniqueness. This extraordinary region has been lauded in works such as ‘I Dreamed of Africa’ for its beautiful landscapes and as a haven for a large portion of Kenya’s endangered species.

Known as a conservation success story, Laikipia’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a true gem, harbouring over half of the population of black rhinos in Kenya, as well as the final two northern white rhinos on Earth. Ol Pejeta is also the only place to see chimpanzees in Kenya at the Sweetwaters Sanctuary.

Other conservancies in the area are equally exceptional. Loisaba is one the best places to enjoy a sleep out, Borana is excellent for a horseback safari and home to the ‘real’ Pride Rock from the Lion King. Lewa was established to protect critically endangered black rhino and home to the largest single population of Grevys Zebra in the world.

A highland plateau, the Laikipia Plateau is a mix of grand plains cut through by the Ewaso Narok River, and rocky outcrops spread across wildlife conservancies, ranches and tribal lands. It can be explored in a variety of unique ways, from seeking out rare black leopards, to tracking wild dog on foot, and meeting the anti poaching units and even camelback safaris.

Laikipia is also celebrated for its rich cultural history, with many conservancies run by communities including the Samburu and Maasai. There are plenty of opportunities to learn about local bushcraft and traditional ways of life on a cultural tour.

The Dry Season

June to September
Although slightly drier than many other Kenyan parks, Laikipia also experiences 2 rainy seasons and 2 dry seasons. The long dry season, from about June to September, is the best time to go on safari, as this is when wildlife seek out water sources and the bush is thinner.

January to March
The short dry season that occurs after these rains, between January and about mid-way through March, is a great time to witness birdlife, baby animals and plenty of predator activity.

The Green Season

October to December
The rainy season starts around October and lasts into December, this marked by increased humidity and cloudy days.

April to May
These months coincide with the long rainy season, it can be difficult to access the park during this time, so make sure to check with us before you book.
