Kafue National Park in Zambia is the country’s oldest and largest national park, at about 22,400 km², much of it is still profoundly wild and populated by around 158 mammal species and 500 bird species.

As one of the largest wildlife parks in the world, Kafue is wonderfully diverse in both its landscapes and wildlife. It is cut through by rivers, giving way to wetlands, miombo woodland, riverine forests and expansive plains. Thanks to the various tributaries and swamps, Kafue National Park’s wildlife is superbly diverse. There’s a great variety of species in the park, including four of the Big 5 and an extraordinary selection of ungulates.

The lions of Kafue are particularly well known, as they have adapted to hunt large herds of lechwe in the swampy wetlands. Other exciting animals include the rare sitatunga antelope, lion, leopard, and the elusive wild dog.

The Kafue offers a truly holistic safari experience, whether you’re staying in a rustic bush camp or a luxury lodge, Kafue provides its guests with a genuine connection with the wild. The park can also be explored in a variety of ways including on a classic Zambian walking safari, canoe or game drive.

The Dry Season

May to October
The best time to go on a safari to Kafue National Park, particularly the northern regions, is in the dry season from around May to early November. This is when wildlife is easier to spot and temperatures are more mild. However, it does start to get very hot in October – so do double check with us first before booking a trip during this time.

The Green Season

November to April
These are the rainy months, or the ‘green season’ in the park. Accessibility can be limited due to water levels and black cotton clay soil. Some camps like those in Busanga Plains, only operate seasonally, from around mid-July to November.
