A testament to untouched Africa, Liuwa Plain National Park in Zambia is one of the oldest conservation areas on the continent. Known as the site of the second-largest wildebeest migration in the world, this park offers a remote and luxurious safari escape.

The Park blends expansive grasslands and waterways leading into meandering lagoons. A hidden western gem in an already wild Zambia, along with hosting a colossal wildebeest migration, visitors can also spot massive herds of zebra and antelope. Alongside cheetah and wild dog, the park also presents a thrilling display of an age-old rivalry; home to megapacks of hyena and great numbers of lion. Liuwa also boasts around 330 species of birdlife, making it one of the best birding locations in Zambia.

With a focus on conservation and exclusivity, Liuwa Plain only has one high-end camp, ensuring ultimate seclusion and thoughtful luxury. The love for Luiwa extends to the communities that peacefully coexist alongside wildlife and benefit from maintaining the park. The park is also the site of the Kuomoka ceremony during the floods, in which one can witness the Lozi King and his rowers surge down the Zambezi River in an ornately decorated boat.

The Dry Season

May to December
November is when the wildebeest migration occurs, this coincides with the best time to witness game, which is from May to December. The long dry season is between May and October. From May to July, the climate is temperate and the water starts to recede, but many birds remain and this is an excellent time to photograph them. From August to October the vegetation is thinner, making wildlife easier to spot. From mid-October to November, the wildebeest migration occurs as the animals move down the northern corridor. It is during this time until April that the rainy season occurs. The start of the rainy season coincides with wildebeest calving season and lots of predator activity, from around November to December.
