Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda is situated in one of the oldest forests in Africa, boasting a tremendous amount of endemic species and the opportunity to witness chimpanzees while going primate trekking.

A mountainous region in the Albertine Rift, Nyungwe forest is home to rare primates including chimpanzees, Colobus, mangabey and L’Hoest monkeys, as well as other shy mammals such as the Congo Clawless Otter and Cerval Cat – not to mention over 300 bird species, 120 butterfly species and more than 1,000 plant species, 140 of which are orchids.

A range of walking and hiking trails wind through the lush surroundings, to Isumo waterfall, Kamiranzovu swamps and waterfall, and across a suspended sky bridge that offers a canopy walk with outstanding views of the verdant forest. Other activities include bush picnics, wildlife walks, and of course the famed primate trekking.

Bordering the park is a range of tea plantations and estates, the standout ones being Gisovu in the north and Gisakura in the west, where you will also find a habituated troop of Colobus Monkeys. Situated on Gisakura is an eco-friendly and highly luxurious lodge, which offers a range of exciting activities and fantastic dining experiences.

The Dry Season

June to September
As one of the main rainfall catchment areas in Rwanda and situated between the drainage systems of both the Congo and Nile Rivers, it’s safe to say that Nyungwe can get very wet. Thus, the best time to visit is during the dry seasons. Rwanda experiences 2 wet and 2 dry seasons, the longest of which occurs between these months.

January to February
This is the second dry season, however, some occasional showers do still happen during these months.

The Green Season

February to May
This is the long rainy season. The park can be difficult to access during this time, so check with us before you book.

October to December
This is the shorter rainy season, although there can be plenty of birds during this time do check with us when planning a trip to Nyungwe during this time.
