Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is the country’s biggest and most celebrated Big 5 safari park, boasting an abundance of wildlife and classical African vistas making it a must for any explorer looking to visit the continent’s great parks.

Spread across 14,651 km² and settled between this historic city of Bulawayo and Victoria Falls – Mosi-oa-Tunya as it is also known – Hwange’s landscapes encompass great plains of savannah, rocky outcrops and woodlands that hide predators such as leopard and lion.

Hwange offers plenty of exciting and unique ways to explore its wild corners. In addition to excellent walking safaris, day and night game drives, bushcraft safaris for kids, and photographic safaris, there is also a safari train that skirts the borders of the park to Ngamo Plains. The park also offers the chance to do a sleep out under the open African skies and numerous private sundowner spots. Various camps will also work alongside local communities to provide cultural tours to learn about Zimbabwe’s rich cultural history.

As for Hwange National Park’s accommodation – With such an iconic park as the backdrop, it’s unsurprising to find plenty of luxury tented camps and exclusive lodges tucked away on private concessions.

The Dry Season

April to September
This is the dry season in the park and a great time to go on safari as animals move to water sources and predators can be spotted more easily in thinning bush. Note, that between June and August, mornings can be very cold – so make sure to pack layers for early game drives. April to July is the best time to combine a trip to Hwange with one to Victoria Falls.

October
Although October is technically a part of the dry season, Hwange can be very hot as temperatures build up before the rainy season.

The Green Season

November to March
These months mark the ‘green’ or rainy season, which sees the park transform and bring with it a bounty of birdlife and baby animals.
