Warm ocean air, scented with spice and salt, sets the tone from the moment you arrive. Days unfold between soft white beaches and the turquoise Indian Ocean, while Stone Town reveals a rich blend of African and Arabic heritage through its winding streets and carved doorways. Zanzibar offers a slower, more considered way to unwind after your safari.

Luxury holidays in Zanzibar

Zanzibar unfolds gently, where the Indian Ocean meets powder-soft shores and days are shaped by the tide, from the calm, turquoise waters of the east to the livelier northern beaches. In the soft light of dawn, women wrapped in traditional kangas harvest seaweed at low tide, while the setting sun calls fishermen home, their boats silhouetted against the blazing sky. Zanzibar is a place to pause after a safari and let time sink into a new rhythm.

Beyond the shoreline, Stone Town reveals the island’s layered past where African, Arabic, and European influences meet. Every corner offers a glimpse into a culture shaped by centuries of exchange. Narrow streets wind between whitewashed buildings and intricately carved doorways, a symbol of the household’s wealth and social status. Enticing scents waft from busy street food stalls, groups gather to listen to live music in the grounds of the Old Fort, and men sit chatting over steaming mugs of rich coffee.

Life here extends beneath the surface as much as above it. Coral reefs fringe the island, where turtles glide through clear water and shoals of tropical fish shimmer in the light. Around Jozani Forest, the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkeys move through the canopy and are found nowhere else in the world. At sea, dolphins swim along the coastline, and in certain seasons, whale sharks pass through deeper waters.

Zanzibar’s sense of luxury lies in its contrasts. Stay in a secluded cove with nothing but sand beneath your feet, or retreat to a refined lodge where every detail is considered. Days might begin with a swim in warm, clear water and a chat with a local Maasai vendor on the beach, then end with dinner by the ocean under the dazzling night sky. Here, the experience is unhurried, immersive, and deeply restorative. Start planning your 2026 / 2027 Zanzibar holiday with us today.

The dry season

June to October
Much like the rest of Tanzania, Zanzibar is best visited during the dry season, when beautiful sunny days are the norm.

December to February
The rains tend to ease off in the latter part of December and the long sunny days return all the way up until March. This is also a fantastic time for snorkelling and scuba diving with the waters at their clearest.

The green season

November
November marks the beginning of the short rainy season, though rains are usually brief, sharp showers, interspersed with sunny patches.

March to May
The middle of March is typically when the long rains begin to fall and April and May are characterised by frequent downpours.

Zanzibar holidays FAQs

Which safari destinations pair well with Zanzibar?
Zanzibar pairs well with East Africa, where safari and coast come together with ease. Tanzania's mainland is the most seamless option, combining the Serengeti’s wildlife with Zanzibar’s beaches, often with a short flight between the two. Kenya offers a similar journey, with the Maasai Mara and its private conservancies followed by time on Indian Ocean beaches. Further afield, Rwanda and Uganda can be combined as part of a wider East African itinerary.
Is Zanzibar a good beach holiday destination?
It’s an excellent beach destination. You can expect an authentic beach getaway where villas open out onto soft white sand and the sparkling Indian Ocean beyond. Immerse yourself in barefoot luxury or make the most of the brilliant watersports and snorkelling on offer. Zanzibar’s best beaches can be found along the northern shores and along the tidal east coast.
What is the dress code in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar has a predominantly muslim culture. Bikinis and swimwear are acceptable on the beach or at the resort, but if you’re exploring Stone Town or local villages, it’s a good idea to dress more modestly. We recommend covering shoulders and midriffs, and wearing shorts, dresses or skirts that cover the knees.
