As Rwanda’s singular Big 5 game park and the only part of the country where you will find savannahs, Akagera National Park stretches across 1,122 km² and is dotted with a selection of luxury tented camps.

Deriving its name from the Kagera River, Akagera National Park has seen dramatic adaptions over recent years as community and conservation efforts have seen an effective rewilding of the park, particularly, the introduction of lions and both black and white rhinos – making it Rwanda’s only Big 5 park.

Akagera also supports the largest protected wetland in central Africa, as well as Lake Ihema – on the banks of which you will find a small collection of luxury tented camps that open up to expansive views of the water.

Akagera is an excellent birding destination, with around 520 species, and a birding tour is a must. Other exciting activities include classic game drives, catch-and-release fishing for tilapia and the must-do of all African safaris – sundowners.
