Katavi National Park is located in Western Tanzania, near Lake Tanganyika and along the Great Rift Valley. The Park is famous for its size – the third largest in Tanzania – and its remote unspoilt wilderness.

Characterised by the vast Katisunga Plain, various lakes and the Katuma River – which are home to plenty of birds, hippos and crocodiles. Katavi also houses one of the largest populations of buffalo on the continent, with herd numbers climbing to about a thousand strong. The park also has plenty of predators, such as lions and leopards, as well as plains game, giraffe and smaller antelope – not to mention around 400 species of birdlife.

One of the best ways to explore Katavi National Park is on a walking safari or by fly camping, however, it can also be done on a classic game drive. Visitors can stay in fly camps, luxury tented camps or relax in a luxury lodge – so it’s really about what you like best.

A visit to Katavi National Park is a great combination with Mahale Mountains National Park – where you can explore the glorious shores of Lake Tanganyika and seek out chimpanzees.

The Dry Season

June to October
This is the dry season in the park and a great time to go game viewing as vegetation is thinner and wildlife will venture to the rivers, lakes and swampy areas.

The Green Season

November to May
This is the general rainy season. While there can be a break from the rain in January, the heaviest rains occur from March to May and parts of the park can be difficult to access during this time. It can also become rather hot and humid in the park over these months.
