Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi is the country’s best Big 5 safari location. Following years of heavy poaching, the park has seen an impressive resurgence in wildlife following conservation efforts in 2012.

Majete is a short trip from Blantyre, with plenty of lodges and activities on offer. Visitors can enjoy a sleep out amongst baobab trees, game drives and community visits. The reserve also has a selection of authentic safari accommodations, ranging from fully kitted lodges to up-market tented camps.

The reserves is a great place to see large buffalo herds, rhinos, wild dogs and giraffes. Majete also boasts the highest concentration of predators in the country, making it the best destination to seek out big cats like cheetah and leopard. There are also around 300 bird species, including five species of vulture and the majestic Bateleur Eagle. The landscapes range from meandering miombo woodlands, too rocky outcrops and the Kapichira Falls.

The Dry Season

April to August
This period signifies the dry season in the park, making it an ideal time for game viewing. While the days are cooler, mornings and nights can be quite cold.

September to October
These months continue the dry season, but as the rains approach, temperatures can rise significantly. Though it’s an excellent time for wildlife spotting, it can become very hot and humid.

The Green Season

November to March
Rain typically begins in November, with temperatures remaining high through December. January and February are somewhat cooler. February and March, the shoulder months, are particularly good for observing baby animals and birdlife.
