An African Holiday Without a Safari

Having just prepared a bespoke itinerary for a client who is going on an incredible holiday with us – that does not include a safari – the trip made us think about how a trip to Africa can include so many activities beyond the safari. At The Safari Edit, we curate ‘Bespoke African Experiences’ and that is exactly what we have done for the above-mentioned client. Having been on several safaris before, their brief was that they wanted to see a different side of South Africa and visit some locations that they had not already.

There is a plethora of experiences to be had when booking with us that do not have to include a typical safari. Our team are African specialists and this includes a detailed knowledge across a huge variety of destinations, activities and places to stay that will exceed your expectations.

Exploring Africa Beyond the Safari: Your Questions Answered

Is it truly worthwhile travelling all the way to Africa if we're not planning a traditional wildlife safari?
Absolutely! While Africa's wildlife is undeniably spectacular, the continent offers a vast tapestry of other incredible experiences. Think of vibrant, cosmopolitan cities like Cape Town, the rich history and unique culture of Ethiopia, stunning coastlines from Zanzibar to Mozambique, the dramatic deserts of Namibia, world-class wine regions in South Africa, or adventurous pursuits like climbing Kilimanjaro. A trip focusing on these elements can be exceptionally rewarding and offers a different, yet equally captivating, perspective on Africa.
What are the non-safari trips mentioned in the article like?
The experiences are incredibly diverse! Depending on the locations featured, you might find opportunities for blissful relaxation on tropical beaches, fascinating cultural immersion through historical sites, markets, and local interactions, culinary adventures exploring unique cuisines and wines, thrilling activities like hiking or diving, or simply soaking up the energy of dynamic African cities. The main article details the specific character and highlights of each recommended destination.
Can we combine some of these non-safari experiences with a short safari?
Yes, combining different elements is one of our specialities at The Safari Edit. It's very popular to add a 3- or 4-night classic safari onto a longer trip focused elsewhere. For example, you could explore Cape Town and the Winelands before a short safari in the Kruger region, or relax on a Zanzibar beach after a Tanzanian safari. We design itineraries that balance different interests and ensure smooth travel logistics between locations.
When is the best time to visit the non-safari destinations in Africa?
The ideal time varies greatly depending on the specific place and activity. Beach destinations have optimal seasons for sunshine and calm seas (avoiding main rainy seasons). City breaks might be more pleasant during milder months. Activities like hiking Kilimanjaro have specific climbing seasons. We provide tailored advice on the best time to travel from the UK based on the destinations featured in the article and your own preferences.
What sort of trip length do you recommend for focusing solely on a non-safari part of Africa, like a city or beach stay?
For a dedicated city break (like Cape Town) combined perhaps with a nearby point of interest (like the Winelands or Atlas Mountains), we usually suggest around 7-10 nights. For a pure beach holiday aimed at relaxation (e.g., Seychelles, Mauritius, Zanzibar), anywhere from 7 to 14 nights is typical, depending on how much downtime you desire.
What kind of luxury accommodation is available in these non-safari locations?
Africa boasts superb luxury accommodation beyond the safari circuit. Depending on the destination, you can find world-class boutique hotels in cities, stunning beachfront resorts, exclusive private villas, elegant wine estate properties, unique desert lodges – all offering high standards of comfort, service, and style.
Are these non-safari African holidays generally suitable for families or couples?
Many are fantastic for different types of travellers. City breaks like Cape Town, certain coastal resorts, and destinations like Mauritius are often very family-friendly. Romantic beach escapes, vineyard tours, or culturally rich city explorations are wonderful for couples. We always consider who is travelling when making recommendations to ensure the trip suits your party.
Can The Safari Edit help us plan and book a luxury African holiday that doesn't include a safari?
Yes, absolutely. While crafting exceptional safaris is at our core, our expertise extends across the continent. We regularly design and arrange high-end holidays focused entirely on Africa's beaches, cities, cultural sites, and landscapes, or combine these elements in unique ways. Our team possesses in-depth knowledge to create your perfect non-safari African journey.
How does the cost of a luxury non-safari trip compare to a traditional luxury safari?
It's difficult to give a simple comparison as costs vary hugely. A top-end safari often has a high per night cost because it's typically all-inclusive (accommodation, meals, drinks, guided activities, park fees). Luxury city or beach holidays might have a lower base accommodation cost, but you'll often pay separately for meals, drinks, tours, and activities. The total trip cost really depends on the specific itinerary, duration, and level of luxury chosen for either type of holiday. We can provide comparative quotes based on your interests.
What about practicalities like visas, health precautions, and insurance for these destinations?
These are essential considerations for any international trip. Visa requirements for UK and US passport holders vary by country. Health precautions (vaccinations, malaria risk) also depend on the specific regions visited – even non-safari areas can have health considerations. Comprehensive travel insurance is always vital. We advise checking the latest FCDO/DOS travel advice and consulting your GP, healthcare provider or travel clinic well before departure for all destinations on your itinerary.
